Sophomore Aspen Auld places at national Alpaca & Llama Show of Champions

Aspen Auld of rural Van Horne and her llama received honors at the ALSA National Show of Champions.      Aspen Rayne Ranch of Van Horne, Iowa, owned and operated by Benton Community High School sophomore and FFA member Aspen Auld, has just returned from a very successful showing at the 2011 Alpaca & Llama Show Association’s (ALSA) “Grand National Show of Champions.” Of the 2 llamas Aspen qualified to enter in the annual end of year national championship, both received top 6 placements including a class Reserve Grand Champion.

  AmeriCorps NCCC Members graduate after completing 10 months of service   AmeriCorps NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps) proudly graduates 160 young adults on Thursday, November 17, 2011. The graduation ceremony begins promptly at 6:30 p.m. and is being held at Vinton-Shellsburg High School Auditorium in Vinton.

Local Benton County Farm Takes National Livestock Championship Honors

Awards garnered at the 2011 ALSA Grand National Show of Champions by Aulds' Lluminous Llamas.   Aulds’ Lluminous Llamas of Van Horne, Iowa, owned and operated by Steve and Sandy Auld, has just returned from a very successful showing at the 2011 Alpaca & Llama Show Association’s (ALSA) “Grand National Show of Champions.” Of the 5 llamas the Aulds qualified to enter in the annual end of year national championship, all 5 received top 8 placements.

NCCC's Cedar 4 in Pierre, South Dakota

By: Cedar 4 In Pierre, South Dakota, Cedar Four, along with Oak One and Oak Four, is working with the Lutheran Social Services of South Dakota to help the disaster areas hit by the floods. In June of this year, flooding of record proportions occurred on the Missouri River, overflowing the banks and washing away trees, cars and homes. Because of the attempts to curb the flowing waters, many of the Levis that were hastily constructed were placed on the wrong side of a few unfortunate houses.

Cedar 3 wraps up NCCC Year with Camp Courageous

By: Dave Condlin An AmeriCorps NCCC team is serving their last week at Camp Courageous of Iowa in Monticello, Iowa. Since September 6th “Cedar Three” has been serving as camp counselors to help promote a safe and enjoyable week for campers with disabilities. As camp Counselors they are working with other staff to lead groups of 4 to 5 campers.

They spent the first four weeks in Columbus working with HFHGC building houses for low income families.

Rapid Progress Made in South Dakota Flood Recovery

Pierre area has made major progress and is further along the road to recovery thanks to help from Lutheran Social Services of South Dakota (LSS-SD) who partnered with AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC).     Lisa Adler, Regional Director of LSS-SD, requested the aid of NCCC via a grant proposal to the North Central Region NCCC campus, located in Vinton IA.
